The benign Lord Ganesha sits cross legged and carries various objects in his hands. In one hand he carries an axe which is used to cut off all attachments. In another he carries a bowl of sweets, which he offers as a reward for penances. He also carries a lotus flower and has one hand up in the abhaya mudra, which is a gesture of fearlessness.
Ganesh is the clearer of obstacles and the protector of knowledge. He should be placed facing a doorway to protect from evil spirits.
